What is CBT ?

Computer-based Test or CBT for the UK is an objective exam conducted by Pearson VUE as a requirement to work as a registered nurse in the UK. CBT is the first part of the test where the candidates can opt for their specialized fields. The options are as follows: Adult nursing, children’s nursing, learning disabilities, mental health nursing.
How CBT Exam works
- The CBT exam can be taken at a Pearson VUE test centre available in most countries around the world.
- CBT is made up of 120 multiple choice questions which have to be answered within 4 hours.
- 50 questions will relate to generic nursing competencies found in each domain of nursing.
- 50 questions will be the application of generic nursing competencies to the specific field of nursing being applied for, for example, adult, child, learning disability or mental health nursing.
- 20 questions will focus solely on the specific competencies required for the field of nursing being applied for.
- The OSCE can only be sat after successfully passing the CBT and is only available in the UK at a designated test centre.

The competence based test, also known as the CBT test is a 120 multiple-choice online question exam set by the NMC to test your ability and knowledge to practice nursing safely in the UK.
The exam is available in most countries around the world and it must be sat a Pearson VUE Test Centre.
The exam lasts for 4 hours to give you enough time to read the question, re-read, answer with confidence and then double check your answers before you submit the exam paper.
Part A: Numeracy – 15 marks in 30 minutes
Part B: Theory – 100 marks in 2 hours and 30 minutes
Typically, your examination will test you on the following areas:
- Professional values
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Nursing practice and decision making
- Leadership, management and team working
- Specific nursing field competencies
Your results will be available after 48 hours. You can check your Pearson Vue Account to see your results.
Your result will be either a pass or a fail and this is governed by an overall pass mark.
The NMC will allow you to take a maximum of three attempts as part of your registration application. However, you’ll need to wait at least 10 days between each sitting. If you unfortunately, fail on your third attempt, your application will close and you’ll need to start a new application if you would like to continue with your registration.
- Complete the 100 practice test questions for your speciality, which offers the same computer-based testing (CBT) environment.
- Ensure that you have booked an exam writing time with ProctorU or Meazure Learning in-person test centre.
- Ensure that you have read and followed the specific instructions related to your exam-writing option.
- Confirm that your booking confirmation has the same first and last names as the two pieces of identification (ID) you will be using on exam day (see below for details). Confirm that your exam specialty is correct.
- Think positively
- Read all instructions
- Read each question carefully
- Anticipate the answer before looking at the options
- Eliminate all obviously wrong answer options
- Click the correct answer on the computer screen (which will highlight your selected answer)
- Be sure to answer all the questions
- Use the CBT’s notation feature to identify questions that you want to come back to later
- Note that pen/pencil and paper are not allowed
- Budget your time: you will have four hours (240 minutes) to complete 160-165 questions, which means just under 1.5 minutes per exam question
