NCLEX - RN

What is nclex exam for nurses? Where can nclex –rn take you?

The NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses) is a standardized exam that is used to determine whether or not an individual is qualified to become a licensed registered nurse. The exam is developed and maintained by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) and is designed to test the knowledge, skills, and abilities of entry-level registered nurses.

To be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN, candidates must have completed an accredited nursing program and meet other requirements determined by the state board of nursing in the state where they wish to practice. Once a candidate passes the NCLEX-RN, they will be granted a license to practice as a registered nurse in that state.

NCLEX Exam Format

The NCLEX exam is a computer-adaptive test (CAT) that uses an algorithm to adjust the difficulty level of questions based on a candidate’s responses.
Candidates are given six hours to complete the exam.
The number of questions varies from candidate to candidate, with a minimum of 75 and a maximum of 265. Of these questions, only 60 are scored, while the remaining questions are pretest items that can be evaluated for future reference.
The NCLEX exam includes multiple-choice questions with four options, as well as alternative item format questions such as fill-in-the-blank, drag-and-drop, hot spot, and chart/exhibit items.
The exam covers four major content areas: Safe and Effective Care Environment, Health Promotion and Maintenance, Psychosocial Integrity, and Physiological Integrity.
This content area covers the management of care, safety and infection control, and the nurse’s role in coordinating care.
This content area covers growth and development through one’s lifespan, prevention and early detection of disease, and health promotion strategies.
This content area covers coping mechanisms, mental health concepts, and support systems.
This covers basic care and comfort, pharmacological and parenteral therapies, reduction of risk potential, and physiological adaptation.
Candidates receive a result after the conclusion of the exam. The passing standard for the NCLEX exam is determined by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) and may vary from state to state.
